Pelican Foundation Will Lead Kenilworth Middle to Success

On March 12th, 2009, the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education approved Pelican Educational Foundation’s application to transform Kenilworth Middle, a consistently failing public school in East Baton Rouge parish, into a high-performing college-preparatory science and technology oriented charter school.

Louisiana State University professor, Dr. Tevfik Kosar, who also serves as president of the Pelican Educational Foundation, said: “After undergoing a rigorous review process, I am very pleased that the state Department of Education and BESE have selected the Pelican Educational Foundation to lead Kenilworth Middle. As a local non-profit organization, we are committed to making a difference in our community by preparing students for academic success through enhanced learning of math, science and technology.

More than 30 Abramson Students Awarded Top Prizes in Citywide Science Fair

The Pelican operated Abramson Science & Technology Charter School announced that more than 30 of its students were awarded top prizes at the 2009 Greater New Orleans Science & Engineering Fair (GNOSEF) yesterday, including Garland Pugh, who won the 1st Place Grand Prize Award in the Junior Division for his project on the production of biogas, a clean, renewable energy source.  
 
Abramson is a science and technology-focused, college preparatory charter school, which is managed by the Pelican Educational Foundation.  Located in New Orleans East, the school was completely destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and reopened in 2007 as part of the Recovery School District.

2009 Annual Abramson Science Fair

January 24th 2009, Pelican operated Abramson school hosted First Annual Abramson Science Fair, an exciting event covering about 120 students with 105 projects. 15 judges coming from different universities and industries handled judging process that took about 2 hours. 24 projects have been chosen as category winners while 3 projects were Grand Award winners the best three of the entire Science Fair. Right after open to public session, award ceremony followed. Songs, dances, elementary student performances added a special color to the ceremony. Thanks to everyone who supported this important event.

Accelerated Reader

Pelican operated Abramson Science & Technology has started Accelerated Reader Program in the school. Accelerated Reader (AR) is reading management software used by students all over the world. This program provides teachers with an effective way to monitor all forms of guided reading practice. With Accelerated Reader Renaissance Place, teachers get even more detailed, objective data to target instruction and ensure success for every student, regardless of level, from emergent reader to college prep! Abramson Science & Technology is committed to the Reading Renaissance Plan which focuses on growth for each child no matter the level. Students are continuously guided to appropriate books within their zone of proximal development (ZPD). This assures that every student is challenged without being frustrated. AR books in the Abramson Science & Technology Library are colored coded for easy selection. All of our students from Kindergarten to Tenth grade are kept busy reading books and taking tests.
