Pelican Foundation Will Lead Kenilworth Middle to Success

On March 12th, 2009, the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education approved Pelican Educational Foundation’s application to transform Kenilworth Middle, a consistently failing public school in East Baton Rouge parish, into a high-performing college-preparatory science and technology oriented charter school.

Louisiana State University professor, Dr. Tevfik Kosar, who also serves as president of the Pelican Educational Foundation, said: “After undergoing a rigorous review process, I am very pleased that the state Department of Education and BESE have selected the Pelican Educational
Foundation to lead Kenilworth Middle. As a local non-profit organization, we are committed to making a difference in our community by preparing students for academic success through enhanced learning of math, science and technology.

“We look forward to working alongside parents, teachers and community leaders to create a high-quality learning environment at Kenilworth where science and technology become vital tools that all our children and families can use for living, learning, and working.” “We’re very excited and not wasting any time. We’ve already identified the lead administrative team and will soon begin the hiring process.”

The Pelican Educational Foundation is a local community based non-profit organization established in December 2005 that is dedicated to preparing students for academic success through enhanced learning of math, science and technology. This new concept for education was developed through a workgroup comprised of professors from LSU, Southern University,
Southeastern Louisiana University.

Pelican Foundation is partnering with a non-profit education management organization, the Cosmos Foundation, which is managing 19 outstanding schools in Texas. These schools have been listed among the best public schools in the nation and received numerous nationwide awards including a National Distinguished School Award and a Math Counts gold medal from
President Bush. For more information on Cosmos Schools, please visit http://www.harmonyschools.org

Kenilworth Middle will become the second RSD school to be managed by the Pelican Educational Foundation. The Foundation is also working with parents, teachers and school leaders, at the Abramson Science and Technology Charter School. Located in New Orleans East, the school was completely destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and reopened in 2007 as part of the Recovery School District. In the Foundation’s first year of operation, student performance scores at Abramson improved by more than 50 percent. Similarly the attendance rate increased from 82% to 97%, and the drop-out rate decreased from 17% to zero compared with previous years.

Another measure of progress is the recent success Abramson students had at the 2009 Greater New Orleans Science & Engineering Fair (GNOSEF). With 13 Junior and Senior Division Awards and 21 Special Awards, Abramson received the most number of awards in the junior division, and the second most number of awards overall in the regional competition. The only school to receive more awards was Benjamin Franklin High School, which has been locally and
nationally recognized as one of the best schools in the state. For more information
